James Spencer Love, Jr.

December 26, 1926-August 2, 2014

He died peacefully at home, on August 2 at 7:25 PM, ET.

Mr. Love, the eldest son of James Spencer Love and Sara Elizabeth Love Appleget, was born in Burlington, North Carolina. He was a graduate of the Woodberry Forest School; Davidson College, class of 1947; and the Harvard Business School, MBA 1949. He raised his family in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. He spent the latter part of his life in Delray Beach, Florida.

He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. In addition, he was inducted into two honor societies, Sigma Delta Pi and Omicron Delta Kappa.

Mr. Love served in the Navy band (playing the baritone), worked in the textile industry, served as Deputy (for textiles) to the Secretary of Commerce in the Kennedy administration, then worked on Wall Street, before beginning a number of business ventures in numismatics, solar energy, education and media.

His great passion was tennis. He also loved playing the game of bridge; he also taught classes, and wrote a bridge primer for new players. He played a number of instruments well, particularly the piano, and had a vast collection of old popular and show tunes that he played from.

Mr. Love has been cremated, and his ashes will be interned at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Delray Beach, where he was a member, next to those of his wife, Meredith (née Morgan) Love, who pre-deceased him. A memorial service will be held there at 2 P.M. on Saturday, August 23rd, 2014.

An additional memorial service is contemplated for Greenwich, Connecticut, probably in October, for family and others who could not attend his internment. For details of such plans, come back to this site, or send an e-mail to Jim at Love dot Name, which is maintained by his family. An e-mail could also signify interest in attending; it's undecided as yet whether to have a second memorial at all.

Mr. Love is survived by an aunt, Jean (née Love) Albert; two brothers, Robert Lee Love, and Julian Love; four half-siblings, Charles Eskridge Love, Martin Eskridge Love, Cornelia Spencer Love, and Lela Porter Love; five children of his first marriage, James Spencer Love III, Rachel Cornelia Love Lorentzen, Lisa Love, Michael Sullivan Love, and Nancy Zahra Love; two children of his second marriage, Peter James Love and Wynne December Love; two (ex-)step-children of his third marriage, Scott Driscoll and Hannah Driscoll; two step-children of his fourth marriage, Rosalind M. Cross and Daniel Cross; thirteen grandchildren, Sean David Gutierrez, Thomas James Gutierrez, Cornelia Lorentzen, Robert Francis Corroon III, Per William Lorentzen, Nicholas Corroon, Talis Marguerite Thorndike Love, Henry Larkin Corroon, and five others; and three ex-wives, Nancy (née Sullivan) Reynolds, Joan (née Howell) Citron, and Christie Coon. His brother, Richard Love, pre-deceased him.

If you have corrections to this web site, photographs, reminisces, or other materials that might be used at his memorial service(s) or on this web site, please contact the family using the e-mail address Jim at Love dot Name, which is not a link or in the usual address format in the hope of thwarting unsolicited advertising.

Death notices ran on Sunday, August 10, 2014, in the obituary sections of The New York Times, Greenwich Time, The Palm Beach Post and The Washington Post. I hope to post links here to the individual notices or guestbooks, but all of these newspapers subcontract their online services to Legacy.Com, and I am waiting for that site to clarify their terms of service, which prohibit (possibly some) links. If other publications publish obituaries, I will at least note them here; if you know of one and don't see it mentioned here, please drop an e-mail to Jim at Love dot Name, so I can update this site.
